I had the title as "Christmas Songs" but then I realized that not everyone may celebrate Christmas, so I changed it to holiday, meaning the type of songs we sing around this time of year.
Here's my list...top ten, no particular order 1.Christmas at Home-Rita MacNeil 2.Seven Joys of Mary-sung by Great Big Sea 3. I Saw Three Ships-especially when sung by BNL 4. The Mummer's Carol-also performed by GBS 5. Snoopy's Christmas-The Royal Guardsmen 6. Darcy the Dragon-Roger Whittacker 7. Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella 8. Now the Bells Ring-Rita MacNeil 9.Christmas in Killarney-especially when sung by the Irish Rovers 10.Bells over Belfast-Irish Rovers
Also, the song "Fairytale of New York", by the Pogues. I guess I could say it's my favourite Christmas song, but it's a bit too depressing for Christmas, I think. I consider it one of my favourite songs-but not necessarily my favourite Christmas song.
So...what about everyone else? What songs do you love to hear this time of year?
Cheers, Ginny

Hi Ginny This is a wonderful topic for discussion! I really love Christmas and I tend to favor the way Christmas was celebrated long ago, as in Victorian times. Also, Saint Francis of Assisi is credited with bringing carols into the formal worship of the church during a Christmas Midnight Mass in a cave in Greccio, in the province of Umbria, Italy, in 1223. I hate it when only one verse is sung as on the radio nowadays. Many songs have five or more verses than are seldom heard. With that said... Here are my top 5 favorite contemporary Christmas Songs! 1. I Saw Three Ships - The Chieftains 2. A Soalin' - Peter, Paul & Mary 3. Carol of the Birds - The Von Trapp Children 4. Sleigh Ride (instrumental) - Leroy Anderson 5. Jingle Bells - Frank Sinatra My Five Traditional Favorites... 1. Mary Did You Know 2. Coventry Carol 3. Good King Wenceslas 4. Mary's Boy Child 5. O Holy Night Cheers, Joe

When you say I Saw Three Ships-The Chieftains, is that the version with Marianne Faithful? If so, I LOVE that song. I have it on a CD, and I think it's one of the best arrangements of that song I've ever heard-second, after BNL's version Mary's Boy Child! I totally forgot to put that on my list...I knew I was missing one! I just recently heard Mary Did You Know...we may sing that in church in the next few weeks. Michael Crawford sings it really well. Speaking of Michael, he also has the best arrangement of Oh Holy Night that I've ever heard. Good choices! Cheers, Ginny

Hi Ginny I'm not sure if Marianne Faithful appears with The Chieftains on "Three Ships", I taped the song off the radio last year. I'll hafta listen to it. Yeah, Michael Crawford's "O Holy Night" is spectacular! I located a great website with loads of Christmas song lyrics... www.juiceenewsdaily.com/1104/news/song_carol_lyrics.html?1132382163406Cheers Joe

I must admit I’m not a fan of Christmas songs. Among my favorites:
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) – Darlene Love White Christmas – Drifters Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas – as sung by Judy Garland to Margaret O’Brien in Meet Me In St. Louis.
I also like classical or choral versions of Christmas tunes, such as The First Noel when it is sung as a round, or Hark How The Bells. I also enjoy Handel’s Messiah .
Also there is a song I like, maybe someone else knows it. It’s about the Christmas Truce in World War I, when German and British soldiers stopped fighting for one day to celebrate Christmas together. I can’t recall the name of the song, but perhaps I will hear it next month.

Faerie-The only Christmas songs I can think of off the top of my head that Rita has wrote are Now the Bells Ring, Mother Mary, Christmas at Home, Christmas Has Meaning, and The Season Will Never Grow Old. Is it one of them? I'm not usually a fan of Rita, but I do love her Christmas music.
Rich-Is the song you're talking about called Christmas in the Trenches? It's a really pretty song. My grandparents have a John MacDermott CD, where John sings it. If I remember correctly, that's what the song is about.

Hi everyone !
Rich -- yeah, Ginny's right. It is a beautiful song. Christmas in the Trenches was sung by McDermott ion his "Time to Remember" concert for PBS and dvd. It's basically about both sides calling a truce for Christmas Eve; exchanging playing cards and smiles instead of bullets.
Faerie -- Josh Groban's "O Holy Night" was just on the radio!
Afanoffiona -- I cherish Aselin's Xmas CD! "Box Full of Memories" is nice! I love "Dylan's Song"...I usually shed some tears towards the end of it. You gotta love Azi talking to Santa on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" !

Hey Joe!
I also like Santa's list. Aselin hits one note in that song that is just unbelievably high for a nine year old. You don't know whether to say, "that is the most amazing thing I have ever heard" or "that is the cutest thing I have ever heard!"
God Bless, afanoffiona

Here is a Christmas song I like, I only know it by the lyrics...
Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat Please put a penny in the old man's hat If you don't have a penny, then a ha'penny will do If you don't have a ha'penny, then God bless you.
;D
