I've only been to one concert, so here's my review!
March 24, 2006-Best night of my life! It's always awesome to see your favourite band perform live for the first time. They were playing at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, PEI. Usually the theatre is quite reserved, but not this night. Fans were screaming, dancing, singing and clapping along. The concert opener was "Captain Kidd". Next was "Jack Hinks" and then "Donkey Riding". I was so so happy to hear "A Boat Like Gideon Brown" and "The Scolding Wife" in the first set. For the longest time, they were my two favourite GBS songs. The banter between Alan and Sean was HILARIOUS as always. For example, when they were introducing "Graceful and Charming", Sean said that is grandfather used to sing it to his grandmother. "They were together for 62 years...until he ran off with a waitress....from the Old Dublin Pub!" (A pub in Ch'town were GBS used to perform) Alan replied with "No Sean, that was you!". Of course, there was also lots of laughs while they were talking about "The Mermaid". Sean's mermaid dance was beyond hilarious. I hardly even remember the song itself, I was laughing so hard. While introducing "I'm a Rover", Sean made a few references to the guy and girl watching "Law and Order" while they spent the night together, which lead to him slightly changing the words to the last verse "She opened the door and she let BOB in, they both shook hands and watched law and order..." During The Scolding Wife, the icing on the cake was when Sean sang "She caught me by the mermaid and threw me naked on the floor". After intermission, the second half was REALLY rocking. Their eighties medley was priceless "I Fought the Law", something else (I forget ) and "Summer of '69", all of which the audience was carrying the song. This medley led into the most upbeat version ever of Run Runaway. I was disappointed that Sean didn't sing "General Taylor", but his rendition of John Barbour was very good. Helmethead was great fun, getting to do the fist pumps (even though only half the audience was even doing it ). By the time they did "Paddy Murphy", I'll admit I was starting to get tired. But, I managed to find enough energy to sing along and dance like crazy to Mari-Mac and Ordinary Day. Now, this was the BEST part of the concert....and quite possibly the coolest thing that ever happened. As they were leaving the stage, we where all clapping and whatnot, and all of a sudden, my sister feels something hit her forehead. She asked my mom what hit her, and my mom says "Well, Bob just threw his guitar pick!". I didn't realize that right at first, as I was too busy yelling "Great Big Sea! Great Big Sea!" along with everyone else who wanted an encore (everyone LOL). I didn't realize until they came back on that Bob's pick was quite possibly sitting on the floor in front of me. Let's just say I spent the majority of "Come and I Will Sing You" on the floor trying to find it. When I finally did, it was seriously one of the happiest moments of my life. I still have the pick, and I keep it in a safe spot. The last two songs of the encore were "Excursion Around the Bay" and "Fortune". I'll never forget how it almost made my cry in Fortune when Alan said "this is your last chance to dance" . However, just when we thought the show was over, the b'ys came back out for ONE more song-the ever popular, accapella, no-mic version of "Old Brown's Daughter". The only word to describe it....WOW. It was a great show. The second best moment (after finding the pick), was during "Consequence Free". The classic line "wouldn't it be great if the band just never ended....". Of course, that line is ALWAYS followed with a huge cheer from the audience. Our cheer started at "if the band", and it went well into the next line. That would indeed be great. I left the show with an awesome T-shirt, autographed picture (pre-autographed unfortunately...I didn't get to meet them ), a guitar pick( ;D), some pictures, and lots of memories. If anyone who hasn't seen them live yet ever gets the chance, GO SEE THEM! Even if you don't know their music, their stage presence and talent is amazing. I can almost guarantee that you'll be hooked on their music!!
If anyone else has seen them, please post your reviews here. It may be a while before I see them again, and I don't want this review to be the only one
I am SO HAPPY that I got to see them. Best concert I've ever been to (even though I haven't been to that many )
