Yup, this is another American who's baffled. God Bless, afanoffiona Hi all, I'm sure Ginny will add more to this, but Peter Mansbridge is a long time anchor of CBC's The National (their evening news-he's sort of Canada's Dan Rather). Also, on that bus trip to 1000 Islands, the bus took us to Ottawa. One of the tour guides on Parliament Hill asked us bunch of Americans who is Canada's Prime Minister and who is Governor-General. Only me and my brother knew...Jean Chrétien and Adrienne Clarkson. Joe

Oh my goodness Joe-you actually knew who the Prime Minister and Governor General were? That's amazing!!
But can you tell me who they are now? Without looking it up??
And you're right- Peter Mansbridge is a news anchor ;D
So I have an idea.... This post is about Fiona at the ECMAs. I say we go back to that topic, because this one is getting really random. All agreed??
Cheers, Ginny

Oh my goodness Joe-you actually knew who the Prime Minister and Governor General were? That's amazing!! But can you tell me who they are now? Without looking it up?? I know the current PM is Steven Harper. As far as Governor General, it's another woman...from Quebec? Michelle something (with 2 dots over one e ) So I have an idea.... This post is about Fiona at the ECMAs. I say we go back to that topic, because this one is getting really random. All agreed?? OK, Ginny.

Hi all, Earlier this evening, Fiona and members of the Barra MacNeils paid tribute to John Allan Cameron. Here are some photos of Fiona in a lovely gold dress:

Nice pictures joe. It was nice how they set it up, never stopping the song but going from one group, or a bunch of singles to the next, and then they all ended with Lord of the Dance. Does anyone know if Stuart Cameron, who was one of performars is John's son?

Yes he is. My favourite part of the entire tribute was Stuart Cameron singing that one verse. He's a pretty good singer For anyone who missed the show and is interested, that picture Joe posted is from when Lucy and Fiona sang The Four Marys. It was beautiful. Tia- I'm assuming you watched the show? What did you think of it? I've had Joel Plaskett's Nowhere With You stuck in my head ever since Oh one more thing... A shocking moment for me was when Ron Hynes announced that Dermot O'Reilly (Ryan's Fancy) passed away Saturday morning. It's so unfortunate that it was too last minute to have a tribute to him as well, for Ryan's Fancy did A LOT for Newfoundland musicians. However, Ron sang a really nice song that he dedicated to Dermot. Anyway, I thought the show was pretty good. There were some really good performances. And the cast recording of Anne and Gilbert won an award!! ;D Cheers, Ginny

I also cannot get Canadian, or really any non-USA, networks, except one or two BBC ones, on my satellite.
But the thing that bothers me is that I have several music channels, and there isn't one that plays anything resembling Celtic music. There are 46 music channels, 5 of them are Latino, but nothing else is non-USA stuff.
I do think Celtic music around here is kind of popular; the Chieftains concert I went to seemed sold out, Leahy will appear in concert. I am going to see Natalie McMaster next month. A couple of years ago I saw the Makem Brothers in suburban Schaumburg and the place was packed, plus the audience seemed to know the songs and can sing along. So Celtic groups are being booked around here.
But I will agree the Celtic music sections of the stores around here are poor. I did see one Great Big Sea album, but the section is quite sparse.
I also do agree that finding Celtic musicians that play "traditional" music around here is very tough. The local group I saw Saturday night, the Dooley Brothers, is definitely not traditional; they play Irish tunes but also Ricky Nelson and Calypso. And they even played those in an Irish pub. But most people like variety like that (as I do). I would love to hear traditional Celtic music though. Hearing Scottish music is very rare.
But groups like the Fenians and Gaelic Storm feel that people would like their Celtic music with an edge to it. And judging by the crowds they draw, they may be right.

Hi all, I'm glad that the ECMA's were a joy to watch. I thought of you, Ginny, when I read that the cast recording of Anne and Gilbert won the Childrens' recording of the year. I saw some photos of Ashley MacIsaac; he just got married! ~~~~~~*~~~~~~ Mott, My digital TV has music channels covering a lot of genres. They have a "Holidays and Happenings" channel. So it's out with the love songs from Saint Valentine's Day and now we've got Cajun and Bayou for Mardi Gras. But soon after that ... I'm expecting IRISH MUSIC ! YAAAAAY !
