The Men of the Deeps is a male choral ensemble composed entirely coal miners from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. This unique group is dubbed "North America's Only Coal Miners Choir". Dressed in the miners' garb of coveralls and hard hats, they make an impressive impact when they enter a concert hall in total darkness with their helmet lamps providing the only light. Formed in 1966, the group's founding purpose was to preserve the traditional music in Cape Breton and in other mining towns. In 1977, the group became the first Canadian musical ensemble to tour the Peoples Republic of China. In 1999, they went to Kosovo and performed a concert on behalf of the United Nations Children's Fund. The choir have recorded numerous CD's: Men of the Deeps The Men of the Deeps I II & III Diamonds in the Rough Buried Treasures Coal Fire in Winter Mining the Soul Their Lights Will Shine And Now the Fields Are Green www.menofthedeeps.com/
