Hi all
This is a tough post to write. Not really a review so I apologize if if should be in another spot. I would have put a review here though, so I hope this will do...
I drove 5 hours on Saturday morning to Des Moines Iowa to see this concert. I got there about 2PM and noticed I had a voice mail message on my cell phone. It was the ticket broker telling me the show was canceled.
I called him back and I asked him if it was due to weather. He said it was canceled because one of the members couldn’t come. He didn’t say which member, or why.
The ticket broker told me it was a sold-out show too. He said he wasn’t sure how he would handle refunds, or if a new show would be rescheduled. And he apologized and that was really about it.
I’m not angry about the show being canceled; after all I take that risk when going to see any performance, but I am very disappointed. I wanted so much to see the Cottars, I hadn’t seen them since August of 2008, I was so excited driving to Des Moines. I played all 4 CDs on my way there, so I got pretty psyched up.
I’m disappointed because to me it isn’t right to cancel a show the same day as the performance. I wish that I had known about the cancelation at least the day before; the ticket broker said he had only found out on the 14th himself.
Of course I hope there is no personal problem with a group member, no illness or family matter. Then again I don’t know why they couldn’t have gotten a substitute, the Cottars in fact have done that in the past. In any event I do get that stuff happens that can cause something like this.
Now I apologize to this forum for writing this, but here is the cynical side of me. Several years ago I had a ticket to see a certain rock performer play in Chicago. That concert was canceled the same day of the performance also. As I found out later, the reason the concert was canceled was because the performer wanted instead to see the Chicago Bulls play a playoff game that night. I was very upset when I heard about that, and stopped being a fan of this performer.
Now I am hoping beyond all hope that the reason the Cottars canceled this show was NOT because the New England Patriots were playing an (American) football playoff game at the same time as the concert. I admit that thought came into my head, and I am praying that there was some other reason the show was canceled (but of course I hope it is not a serious matter either).
The thought came into my head because I would think if any of them liked football they would root for this team, as they are close to their locations, and would perhaps want to see the game. I must say if I do find out that this was the reason, then…well let’s just say the group would lose one of their biggest fans.
Having said all this, I do hope I hear what the reason for the cancelation was. I guess it would be too much to expect for a band member to call me to tell me personally (and I am sure the ticket broker could give them my number, to tell them a fan drove 5 hours to see them, what a great fan I am). I do hope I get an explanation and an apology from someone associated with the group; I hope the Cottars don’t feel it is beneath them to do that.
Perhaps I am taking this too personally and expecting way too much. But it isn’t everyday that I take a 10 hour roundtrip drive in the heart of winter to see a group perform. In fact I have never done that till yesterday. I do feel I am entitled to an apology and an explanation from someone close to the band. How I would get that, I don’t know, unless someone talks to the ticket broker and gets told about my trip. Perhaps they can post something on their Facebook wall, anything.
As I said I am not angry, just disappointed and sad.
Thanks for reading.
