Alas, I wish I were a wayfaring traveller. Ginny and The Shoelace, remember this photo from our last kitchen party?

I remember that picture! I'm the lady in the right hand corner with the nice green shawl The funny thing is, I actually wear glasses just like hers! Oh and Billy Peddle - good to know it's the bodhran. That is the correct answer! Cheers, Ginny

Good for you, Billy...I want to hear you playing the bodhran down here in PA ! Joe

Ok, I'm just throwing this one up in the air to see what people think.
We all know how hard The Cottars work to put on quality performances for us. People don't realize it, but it takes a whole lot of work to put a performance together like that.
I thought that, since many of the Cottars' fans also play musical instruments, there might be some way we could give back to them by performing for them ourselves. I don't know how to work out the details, but I was wondering what everyone thought about the idea.
God Bless, afanoffiona

That would be cool...especially if we could somehow play their songs Okay, first question-who here sings like Fiona? Any volunteers? hmmm...we may have to come back to that one...then again, Roger once mentioned he sang some...maybe he could cover Ciaran's parts...unless he has an impressive range, then he can be Fiona as well. Second question-Who fiddles like Rosie/Claire........what about Kim? She fiddles, does she not? She also hasn't signed in for months, so she's not likely to see this Any guitar players out there? What about piano? Hey affanoffiona-you do! You could do that. I could play the tin whistle. Adam (and Joe, if he practices ) could play the bodhran, the Shoelace could play the snare drum (do the Cottars even have a snare drummer? ) Haha, that was fun to imagine all of us doing that...this is me now Cheers, Ginny

Hi all,
There is no doubt that many of my member friends here are very musically gifted.
It would be wonderful if we all got together and performed some Cottars songs. Fi and Ci would love it!

Hey Ginny! Ya, it would be neat if we could all get together, but that is rather impractical seeing as how we are spread out all over the continent. I was thinking more along the lines of a few people at a time getting together and performing for them. I mean, tours are difficult, and, as Joe said, I think the Cottars would enjoy hearing us play [or sing] for them. It would be entertainment for them, and they could also relax and be relieved of some of their stress since they would not have to perform with us. I think they might also feel at home if we played some Cape Breton tunes as well. I don't even think the goal is to sound like the Cottars [that is impossible, because no one sings like Fiona ]. It is more like giving back to them a little portion of what they have given us. I remember the Cottars saying one time that folk music is not that popular anymore, and they wanted to do their part to help with bringing it back. I think if we as fans did something like this, it would show how much they have meant to all of us, and that, at least with us, they have accomplished their goal! God Bless, afanoffiona

God Bless, afanoffiona Hey all I wanted to add my 2 Canadian cents in. I cannot play an instrument. I can sing some (not like Fiona!! Nor even like John McDermott, but I sing OK). But I am sure it would be difficult for me to join in anyway, because I do live far from everyone too. I have a feeling if this were to be done, it would have to be done in Nova Scotia. Anyway afanoffiona, I agree with you 100%. There is a local band I like, I have seen them for years. They play Irish and other folk music, very easy going. Anyway me and other friends see them perform all the time, and they are just as happy to see us sitting there, as we are to hear them perform. In fact, that’s a big reason why they perform at all, because they are happy knowing they have fans who enjoy their style of music. I would think the Cottars would love to know, somehow, that they have loyal fans like you and others in the forum. I know there is the guestbook on their site and things like that, but like you said, if they knew that they are loved and admired, whatever they play or how they sound that night (because they probably have off-nights too) they'd be thrilled I would think. A performance for them would be great but it might be tough to set up. I guess you can invite them somewhere, where a sound system can be set up, and play just for them. And you are right, it doesn’t have to be perfect. I know if I were a Cottar I would love my friends to play for me, especially Cottars’ songs! That’s a great tribute of fandom. I wouldn’t care if they didn’t sound that great, it would be the thought. Anyway I hope it can be pulled off, or maybe there can be another idea to show that they are loved and appreciated (like a plaque? Or maybe a compilation CD of their songs, done by fans, but that would be tough to do too).

Hey Everyone! I wanted to let everyone know that I played the tin whistle at two churches today, and everyone thought it was really good. I had many compliments including one from someone who didn't even know what a tin whistle was. I suppose there really is a market for Celtic music, if one looks for it. God Bless, afanoffiona I've recently started playing my tin whistle in church as well. I decided to play along with a song one day while I was at a church choir practice, and everyone thought it sounded really nice with the piano and the choir singing. I'll be playing some songs through the Advent season in church on the piano, tin whistle, who knows what else.... Oh and affanoffiona-if you go to The Cottars myspace, read the first (at least I think it's the first...one of the first, at least) comment. The one with the two girls, who invited The Cottars to go to their myspace and listen to their tunes. That's an idea of how we can perform some music for The Cottars. Cheers, Ginny

I'd like to add 100 Canadian cents in (umm...a loonie, right Ginny!) That's great that you're adding music to your church. I've thought about joining the choir in my church for Advent. I bought a missal to follow the mass...it's better than those books found in the pews!
Afanoffiona...you've got to ask The Cottars to add you on myspace. You could include your website!
Cheers Joe
