The Cottars' musical director explains the group's current situation...
"The band had internal issues for a long time and those finally came to a head recently. No mediation was able to resolve things. The Cottars had a successful run, considering their ages, but I guess, simply put, the band’s time had come. There’s some relief and some disappointment, depending on who you talk to. But, hopefully, all four band members will use their Cottars experiences as a springboard to other adventures. They’re still young and have so much to look forward to."
"The future of a number of the gigs is obviously in jeopardy. Ciaran & Fiona are interested in playing until December but Jimmy & Roseanne are not. We hate to disappoint fans and promoters. Ed Kenney of McDermott Entertainment is trying to sort things out. That’s all the info I have at present. "
"Great Big Sea are hugely popular up here, especially among the college crowd. "
"Thanks for your interest & support of The Cottars & East Coast Celtic music. Keep up the great work."

Great article...but I am a wee bit confuzzled...
You all know that I LOVE Great Big Sea, but what on earth do they have to do with the Cottars splitting up? I'm sure they are hugely popular up there, but that comment seems completely unrelated...unless...did someone specifically ask him how popular GBS is in Cape Breton? If not, that is a very random comment
Cheers, Ginny

I e-mailed him about that Cottars concert on August 8...to ask him if it was still on. He knows about our forum, so I told them that one of my friends (and h-u-g-e fan of GBS) included lots of GBS things on the forum. Hope this 'splains the confuzzle. Joe

Hey Joe,
I am wondering what he means by "internal issues." I really hope it isn't personal with them and that they will still be friends after the breakup. However, it is hard to not read it that way when he talks about "mediation."
It will be a very sad day if the Cottars break up. However, it looks very iminant.
God Bless, afanoffiona

I am confused by this as well, but I don't think the details will be forthcoming...at least not for awhile. But whatever the nature of the rift, it does seem permanent.
Jimmy's health condition seems to be just another minor hindrance. It wouldn't explain feelings of antagonism and stress in the MacGillivray camp.
Hopefully Jimmy will get better and both duos will continue to perform if they still wish to.
