The Cottars will be appearing at the annual "Christmas Daddies" telethon on Sunday, December 3rd. The Christmas Daddies Telethon is broadcast live on CTV on the first Sunday in December each year. The seven-hour telethon, a Maritime tradition, benefits less fortunate children throughout the region. Funds raised are returned to the area from which they originated, and are distributed by the Salvation Army. The Cape Breton Christmas Daddies Telethon is broadcast simultaneously with the Halifax-Moncton show, and can be viewed 11am-6pm (Atlantic Standard Time) on the first Sunday in December each year on CTV. Also, viewers across Canada can watch the last three hours of the Cape Breton Christmas Daddies broadcast on ASN, Bell Express View (Channel 202), Star Choice (Channel 340) or cable channels - check your local listings. This gives "Capers" throughout Canada an opportunity to enjoy this long-time Cape Breton tradition In the past twenty-nine years the Cape Breton Christmas Daddies Telethon, produced and televised from Sydney, has raised over three million dollars. Christmas Daddies Telethon raises nearly $300,000
The 2006 Christmas Daddies telethon from Nova Scotia had performances from the usual suspects of the Barra MacNeils, The Cottars, Matt Minglewood and Rita MacNeil. And then there was a musical performance from someone you might not have expected to see on the broadcast. The province's fiddle-playing Premier Rodney MacDonald performed a square set live on-air for a nationally televised audience.
Scott Boyd, co-host of the show produced at CTV’s Sydney station on George Street, said the telethon has been phenomenal this year.
“The phones are just going crazy. They’re going nuts,” Boyd said outside the studio, taking a momentary break from his on-air duties.
“The Cottars were on singing a traditional tune. And in any other place in the world the song would say, ‘Oh my God, let’s just slow it down.’ Well it slowed it down just long enough that you could hear the phones just come to life.” The Christmas Daddies telethon, a non-profit organization, raised a record $296,307 for less fortunate children. The money is turned over to the Salvation Army, which distributes it to needy families. On hand in the studio was country music award-winner Aaron Lines, CTV's Corner Gas stars Gabrielle Miller and Janet Wright and comedian Reed Rankin. Another highlight was the performance by Rita MacNeil and the Men of the Deeps

That is so neat that the Cottars would take time out of their schedule to do something like that. Still reminds me of Fiona's kindness to that kid in the wheelchair at the Dublin Irish Festival. I could not believe how much respect I had for her after that.
I hope that they will not forget to do things like this when they become old and famious. We need more role models like the Cottars rather then all of the music stars on TV who seem to have a knack for getting arrested.
God Bless, afanoffiona
