Hey Ginny and Joe,
I heard Cape Breton is a music lover's paradise. I hope that some day I can hear Aselin sing in her home town of Glace Bay as people say that is an incredible experience.
It is hard to say what is going to happen to each member of the Cottars. Joe said that Alister said that they each had different visions for the group. I think what happens to them is largely going to depend upon how each side goes about trying to persue each vision. Might the two become compatible again? We don't know. I guess we all just assumed that when the Cottars grew up, nothing would be different. I guess that is not always the case.
God Bless, afanoffiona

Cape Breton IS a music lover's paradise...so is Newfoundland, in my opinion...come to think of it, so is Atlantic Canada...it's too true when you say we all expected them to stay together forever. As I type this, the Great Big Sea song "Time Brings" is going through my head...the line "Time brings all things to an end"...I guess that's what's happening now, with the Cottars. As time went on, they realized that they wanted to do other things, so their time together ended. I hope that doesn't sound to cheesy , but it's true Cheers, Ginny

Hi everyone from a subdued Cottars fan in the UK. I was hoping that this story would be officially denied by now but the latest news does not look too hopeful. I found this in The ChronicalHerald.caCottars’ N.S. farewell tour set for NovemberBy ANDREA NEMETZ Entertainment Reporter The Cottars, who recently announced they will be disbanding at the end of the year, will perform a farewell tour of the Maritimes in November. The tour begins Thursday Nov. 16 at The Playhouse in Fredericton and ends Nov. 25 at the Imperial Theatre, Saint John. Nova Scotia dates include: Friday, Nov. 17 at Convocation Hall, Wolfville; Saturday Nov. 18, SAERC Auditorium, Port Hawkesbury; Sunday, Nov. 19, Savoy Theatre, Glace Bay; Tuesday, Nov. 21, deCoste Centre, Pictou and Wednesday, Nov. 22, Rebecca Cohn Auditorium, Halifax. The group comprising two teen brother and sister duos, Ciaran MacGillivray, 18 and his sister Fiona and Jimmy MacKenzie, 18, and Roseanne 16, has been together for five years. They have won two East Coast Music Awards for best new artist in 2003 and roots/traditional group of the year in 2005 and have appeared twice on the awards’ national CBC Television broadcast. They have been special guests of Symphony Nova Scotia and will make their third and final headline appearance at the Rebecca Cohn on Nov. 22. The Cottars have toured North America, Europe, and Japan and were featured special guests on the Chieftains’ 2006 tour of the U.S., the highlight of which was a St. Patrick’s Day concert at Carnegie Hall in New York. They starred in their own CBC-TV special in 2004 and have released three albums, the last of which, Forerunner, is on the U.S.-distributed Rounder Records label. Tickets are now on sale for the Halifax show at the Rebecca Cohn box office, 494-3820 or www.dal.ca/artscentre and Wolfville at Acadia University box office 542-5500 or 1-800-542-8425. Thanks for the article, Roger. It's great that the Cottars will honour their committment to the Maritime tour. Ginny, dear, this is good news! It would be nice, though, if the group return to Cape Breton for a final chéilidh after the tour. Joe

Here's an article from the Boston Herald...[blue]Hotline: Celtic Cottars call it quits Tuesday, June 27, 2006 The Cottars, the fastest-rising young stars on the Celtic music scene, have broken up. The surprise bust-up of the Cape Breton teenage quartet occurs just months after the release of their Rounder Records debut CD and a big American tour with The Chieftains. The Cottars are made up of two sets of siblings, ages 16 to 19, and according to the band’s Boston-based management, McDermott Entertainment, the decision to call it quits was made by the parents of Ciaron and Fiona MacGillivray. They informed Pam McDermott that the teens were unhappy with their recent high-powered, world-tripping life and mentioned “antagonism and stress.” “To disband right at the time when everything was set, all over the world! What a shame that a group this talented won’t be able to pursue a very successful career,” McDermott said yesterday. DANIEL GEWERTZ[/blue]

Another article; this one from the Cape Breton Post. Here I will include some info that's new to us... Tuesday, June 27, 2006 Cottars calling it quits By Chris Connors According to a story in the July 1st issue of Billboard Magazine, The Cottars will soon split up because siblings Ciaran, 18, and Fiona MacGillivray, 16, can’t “endure any more antagonism or stress.” Manager Pam McDermott of Boston-based McDermott Entertainment confirmed that the traditional folk quartet, which also includes Baddeck brother and sister pair Jimmy, 18, and Roseanne MacKenzie, 16, will go their separate ways following eight festival dates this summer. “On the record, I will say that it’s a shame that these talented individuals are breaking up just as they were on the cusp of tremendous success in the United States and abroad,” she said. “I wish it hadn’t happened.” Ciaran and Fiona’s mother Beverly MacGillivray said Monday that The Cottars will embark on a fall farewell tour of the Maritimes, including a stop at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay. She declined to comment on the pending breakup until the tour wraps up, saying “we would prefer to be interviewed about the last six years at the end of November when we have finished the dates.” She also took aim at speculation that the split was instigated by disagreements over control of the band. In his story, Billboard Canadian bureau chief Larry LeBlanc quoted insiders as saying the MacGillivrays controlled the day-to-day operations of the band, with legendary songwriter and folklorist Allister MacGillivray choosing the material and co-producing the albums while his wife Beverly supervises the act on the road. “We really have not been interviewed and have decided that the timing is just kind of premature at this point, so any kind of press is really based on theory and whatever it is . . . ” Beverly said. “It’s been five and a half years and it really just seems like it’s time. These were young kids and now they’re teenagers and going in their separate directions and all of that.” The Cottars formed six years ago after Ciaran and Fiona MacGillivray and Jimmy and Roseanne MacKenzie met during a Highland Village Day concert in Iona. The band released two previous albums — Made in Cape Breton (2002) and On Fire (2004) — and won best new artist honours at the 2003 East Coast Music Awards. Their rendition of The Briar and the Rose at the national broadcast of the show also earned the group a Gemini nomination for best performance on a variety show. On Fire! also garnered the band the 2005 ECMA for roots/traditional recording.

Roseanne MacKenzie might accompany John Mc Dermott on some of his concerts in 2007.

The news of a breakup is never happy news, but what makes it even sadder is that it seems like it is not on the best of terms. The phrase, “endure any more antagonism or stress” worries me. It feels like the end of the relationship. I mean, a break up is AN end, but the press statements just feel so final. I understand that these kids have been under enormous pressure, and have done quite a lot of work in the past six, from recording to performing to inteviews...it's amazing that they've had the fortitude to last this long with all that stress. And I understand that they're older now, and probably want more say in the material they perform, might have developed differing opinions, or even gotten tired of the music scene. They might want to go to University or do something else with their life for a change. But it doesn't feel like any of those things is the problem. They didn't say they wanted to take a rest, or pursue other interests for the time being. I know without word from the parties involved, all I can do is speculate wildly, so I won't theorize. I just really wonder about the word "antagonism." It makes me feel so horrible for those kids, and really pessimistic about any possible reunion. I hope I'm reading too much into Mrs. MacGillivray's statement.

That seemed really odd to me too, paraclete. When I saw the Cottars down in Dublin, it really seemed like a whole different atmosphere than when I saw them in Chicago. When they were in Dublin, it was all about fun. They just let loose and let their talents take over. However, at the performance in Chicago, it seemed more buisness like, and much more forced. I don't know if it was just the pressure of playing with the Chieftains in Chicago, or the long road trip, or what. It just didn't seem like the same group personality wise [except for Rosie, of course, who holars, shouts, and gets excited every performance].

wow. I'm a bit late in this, but I'm dissappointed! I guess we'll just respect their decision and hope everything works out for the better for all of them.

Hi Caite,
It looks like whatever dispute there is worse than we thought. I had hoped to see them on August 8, but their musical director Allister was very unsure about any future performances.
Also Jimmy is undergoing some heath problems; he's had colitis in years past but Allister didn't know exactly.
Cheers Joe

I hope Fiona keeps singing. Her voice is the main reason why I love the Cottars.

Hey Portia! Welcome to the forum. As I've said before, we are relatively harmless people. However, we are all a tad insane, which you will soon realize ;D Fiona does indeed have a wonderful voice. I agree with you that I hope she keeps on singing. And yet again, I have taken Captian MacCeilidh's job of welcoming the new member...OH WELL ;D Cheers, Ginny
