Rosie MacKenzie is from Baddeck, Nova Scotia. She grew up in the music and traditions of Cape Breton.
Barely in her teens, Rosie, along with her brother Jimmy performed at various clubs and festivals. In early 2000, they met Ciaran and Fiona MacGillivray. These four young musicians pooled their talent and became The Cottars.
Roseanne has become one of the most proficient fiddlers of her age. Her ability to play the fiddle whilst stepdancing has become legendary. Jimmy is proficient on the guitar, bodhran, and banjo.
During the next five years, The Cottars performed hundreds of performances around the world. Health concerns sidelined Jimmy on occasion.
The two families met in early 2000 while playing on the same bill at a festival in Iona. Six months later, while performing alongside each other at a club, a DJ suggested they perform together. John McDermott, member of the Irish Tenors, quickly signed the new group under his label and soon included The Cottars in his PBS performance "Time To Remember". McDermott also included The Cottars in many of his shows.
In 2006, it was announced that Roseanne and Jimmy would no longer be a part of The Cottars. Several issues led to this disbandment.
Roseanne soon joined John McDermott as part of his touring band for the latter half of 2006.
Not wanting to hang up her dancing shoes and fiddle, Roseanne has formed her own band. She sought the talent of Pauline Scanlon of Ireland as lead vocalist.
Roseanne and her new band hope to release a CD in late 2007.
