Richard Wood was born on Prince Edward Island in 1978. He is a dynamic step dancer and fiddler since the age of 12.
Richard has earned the Don Messer Memorial Trophy for top Maritime fiddler TWO times! He took home an ECMA award in 1998 for best Instrumental Artist and Roots / Traditional Artist.
He is no stranger to also performing on television. Richard, performing alongside The Chieftains and Shania Twain, appeared on David Letterman and Good Morning America. Richard also appeared on The Celtic Electric, a CBC special, with Jean Butler of River Dance and many top artists from around the world. Also he was featured in a BBC special in Scotland and appeared on The Vicki Gabereau show February 2001.
Richard wowed nearly a half a million spectators on Canada Day's Parliament Hill celebrations. He's toured the USA with The Chieftains and played Carnegie Hall in New York on St. Patrick's Day. Richard performed for Her Majesty the Queen at a Jubilee Gala on 10th October 2002 at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto. Richard also played at a reception for Prince Charles at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, and has performed all over the world with The Chieftains, from the USA to Italy to Asia.
Richard has completed many tours of Europe, including Germany, France, Belgium and Denmark. He has travelled to Japan with Prime Minister Chretien, where he performed for the Emperor, and Prince and also a delegation of Prime Ministers. On 1st July 2000 he performed at Expo in Hanover, Germany and later for the Governor General's Awards, which were broadcast nationally on CBC Television.
His high energy show is a combination of fiddling virtuosity and stunning showmanship. Richard will be joining a new Celtic group called "The MacKenzie Project", headed by ex-Cottar siblings Roseanne and Jimmy MacKenzie. Richard will continue to evolve his approach to traditional Celtic jigs, reels, and strathspeys, tempering the mix with sweet airs and lively polkas.
