Ennis & The MacKenzie Project Tour - Nov 09

Joining The MacKenzie Project on this tour, is Newfoundland's Ennis, formerly known as The Ennis Sisters.

The MacKenzie Project is fronted by former Cottars fiddler and step dancer, Rosie MacKenzie, who is joined on piano by Howie MacDonald of Rankin Family fame. Ireland's Pauline Scanlon will be handling vocals, while Ireland's top Celtic guitarist, Donogh Hennesy, is the fourth member of the group.

Rosie played to sold out houses across Canada, toured with The Chieftains and performed at Carnegie Hall in New York. She has also performed solo dates across Canada, and received four standing ovations when she headlined Musique du bout du Monde Festival in Quebec last summer.

I mentioned this back in January and it looks like some of the dates are are being confirmed.

The November 13 Ennis & The MacKenzie Project concert will be in Fredericton, NB. Yesterday the Fredericton Playhouse has announced their 2009-10 Spotlight Series. It looks like a brilliant line-up...take a look at it at the Playhouse's Facebook page...

Two of Atlantic Canada’s finest young Celtic acts will be touring the Maritimes together in November.

The MacKenzie Project is a Celtic supergroup fronted by former Cottars fiddler and step dancer, Rosie MacKenzie, who will be joined on by three incredible musicians. Piano duties will be held by Rankin Family veteran Howie MacDonald, who will also join in on fiddle with Rosie & Co. Ireland's Pauline Scanlon, who has toured the world as the lead singer in the Sharon Shannon Band, will be handling vocals, while Ireland's top Celtic guitarist, Donogh Hennessy, is the fourth member of the group. Donogh was a founding member of the Irish super group Lúnasa. His last album was nominated for Folk Album of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Awards. Donogh has also performed and recorded with many other leading Irish artists, including John Spillane, Pauline Scanlon, Gerry O’ Connor, Frankie Gavin and a four-year stint with the Sharon Shannon Band.

The MacKenzie Project & Ennis - November 10th - 9 PM - $25 (but where ??)

Well, it's not often one hauls out that once-oft-used term - supergroup - but it pretty much applies to The MacKenzie Project, especially if you're a Celtic music fan and, let's face it, who isn't? The band features some of the hottest young performers from both sides of the Atlantic and grew out of Rosie MacKenzie’s desire to continue her career, especially as a touring artist, in the wake of the break-up her well-known Cape Breton band, The Cottars. She's a dynamic fiddler, stepdancer, and harmony vocalist, and she called on some friends to help, hence the "project" part of the band name.

One of her first calls was across the Atlantic for a lead vocalist, the stunning Pauline Scanlon. Pauline’s vocals have been described by one prominent critic as “singing [that] seeps into and ultimately unmasks the secrets of the soul.” (Irish Echo, 2006). Former vocalist for the Sharon Shannon Band, Pauline is truly one of Celtic music’ brightest young stars. Also joining the mix is Pauline’s frequent producer, arranger and guitarist Donogh Hennessy, formerly of the groundbreaking Irish band Lúnasa. Next, Rosie reached out to a cast of all-stars who will handle piano and second fiddle duties. Currently that chair is capably filled by 20 year-old piano/fiddle/stepdance wiz Robbie Fraser, a certified member of the ‘next generation’ of Cape Breton masters. She'll also be joined for the Carleton show by Cape Breton fiddle legend, Howie MacDonald.

One should expect a show that will bring a potent blend of styles and traditions, with everything from blazing Cape Breton fiddle sets, to powerhouse vocals, to precision stepdance routines; everything from ancient reels and strathspeys, to Pauline’s unforgettable renderings of traditional and contemporary songs.

Unless I completely misunderstood, or just heard her wrong, I'm pretty sure that Rosie said their new CD was just about ready, and would be released at the end of the tour. Well...the tour ends today...fingers crossed?
