Oh my, I'm always slow when it comes to things like this. For a week now, I've been meaning to post a concert review and it kept slipping my mind. Sigh..oh well, I'll do my best to remember the details of the show.
Last Friday, Dec 14, forum member caimbeulach and I attended a Fables concert. The concert was originally supposed to be Newfoundland band The Irish Descendants, but for reasons the band was unable to go through with the tour. The Fables, who are also from Newfoundland were asked to perform instead, and fortunately, they agreed.
The show was also orginally supposed to be a Christmas show, but because the Fables had little time to prepare for the tour, they chose to perform a mix of songs, some Christmas, and some of their other songs which include traditional Newfoundland songs and original compositions.
Some of the songs I remember them performing included Feller from Fortune, Lazy Tom, Jolly Roving Tar, Down East Day, Mauzy Monday, Whiskey You're the Devil, St. John's, and some of the Christmas songs included traditional carols such as a medley of Ding Dong Merrily on High and Joy to the World, as well as Silent Night, and other songs such as Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and an original composition.
The show was very good. The only disappointment was that the audience seemed to made up mostly of an older generation who didn't seem terribly excited to be there. The Fables had a lot of energy and the concert would have been amazing if more audience members had got up to dance, or even clapped and sang along. Maybe they aren't as well-known amongst younger people as I thought, and I don't think the concert was advertised that well, especially since all of us originally had the intention of seeing the Irish Descendants. I hope that when they come here again, the audience will be more enthusiastic for them. ;D
After the show, they came to the theatre lobby. caimbeulach went to get his cd signed that he had bought. As I expected, they were very nice, and if I remember correctly, each of them wished us a "Merry Christmas" as well as the typical "I hope you enjoyed the show, thanks for coming" etc.
Overall, it was very good. I look forward to seeing them again someday, hopefully soon.
Cheers,
Ginny
