John Allan Cameron was a Canadian folk singer and guitarist. Born in Nova Scotia in 1938, he moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 1957 where he became an ordained Roman Catholic priest through the Order of the Oblate Fathers. But in 1964, a few months after ordination, Cameron obtained a dispensation from the church to pursue studies in education at St. Francis Xavier University, and eventually a career in music.
He released his first album in 1968 and during his music career he went on to release nearly a dozen albums and compilations. Cameron appeared in many television specials in the 1970's and 80's
John Allan was the first Canadian musician to reach national and international success performing traditional East Coast Celtic folk music. His support to younger musicians was quite evident to countless artists such as Natalie MacMaster and the Barre MacNeils. John Allan received the ECMA Lifetime Achievement award and became a Member of the Order of Canada in 2003.
In January 2005, Cameron was diagnosed with leukemia. Many fund-raising projects and concerts were organized to help his family with the expenses and cost of treatments.
Sadly on November 22, 2006, Cameron died of bone cancer in Toronto. Cape Breton lost her most prominent musical ambassador.
