Hey guys!
I don't really have much of a review, but I'll tell you a bit about the concert. The other featured bands were The Belfast Pipe Band from PEI, Richard Wood trio (included Gordon Belsher and Darla MacPhee) and the Celtic Ladies. A local group of dancers called the Dunvegan Dancers also performed with some of the bands.
Richard Wood is a fantastic fiddler who kept the audience in awe the whole time he played, and earned himself a well-deserved standing ovation at the end. There are certain really good fiddlers that I don't really like to listen to because they use too much ornamentation that can really take away from the song. I thought that Richard used just the right amount...it showed how amazing he is, but didn't make the tunes sound overly contemporary. The Celtic Ladies are a group of young women from around PEI, plus one man named Jon Matthews from Sydney Mines, CB. They have a good balance of vocal and instrumental tunes, which include some stepdancing. I liked the lead vocalist's voice too. The pipe band was great, they played your typical pipe band tunes and it sounded good in the rink where the concert was held.
The Barra MacNeils came on stage after a short intermission, and they played for nearly two hours. Some of the songs they played were:
The Clumsy Lover Set
Nancy-O
Rattlin Roarin Willie
a set of gaelic songs, including Am Pige Ruadh
Don't Call Me Early
Longest Day
Misty Moisty Morning
Haven't Got A Care
and more. I took quite a few videos and pictures which are included here as well. Overall, it was a fantastic concert and I'm really glad I got to see them live. I've been a fan for a few years now, but they are quickly becoming one of my favourite bands, right up there with Great Big Sea
I think they're coming back here again early next year, and I'm really looking forward to seeing them live again!
Here are the videos:
