I saw this on Newfoundland's Facebook page. I thought it was fitting to post it here since, for those who are not aware, Ron Hynes was inspired by this event to write the song "Atlantic Blue". Ocean Ranger Remembered.
30 years ago today the people of Newfoundland and Labrador were waking up to the news that the offshore oil rig the Ocean Ranger had disappeared during the night in a vicious winter blizzard, taking with her all 84 men on board. The semi-submersible rig had been drilling an exploration well in the Hibernia oilfield when a storm system battered her with 160 km/h winds and 30 metre waves. The subsequent Ocean Ranger Inquiry learned that a huge wave smashed a porthole window, causing the rig to list on the evening of the 14th. Early the next morning an SOS was sent out calling on Search and Rescue to get the men off the badly listing rig. Another message was sent indicating that the men were being evacuated to the life boats, but not long after that, the signals ended, and the rig was never heard from again. Newfoundland will never forget. R.I.P to everyone who lost their lives
