Ciaran and Fiona have a recording on the CD "Cape Breton by Request". Fiona sings lead vocals on the Rankin family classic "Fare Thee Well Love", with Ciaran on back-up vocals. It's a beautiful arrangement of the song. In fact, the whole CD is pretty good. I recommend it to anyone who is a lover of Cape Breton music.
Cheers, Ginny

Hi NL, I moved your post over here Three songs were covered by Aselin Debison...watch on YouTube. The Island Getting Dark Again Rise Again Fare Thee Well Love...as sung by Jimmy and Cookie Rankin. It's a very sad song. Song For The Mira...written by Fiona's dad! The Four Marys...this is a Christmas song. Very good too. Those are the only songs that I am familiar with. The other artists are well-loved and popular musicians from CB. You might want to try eBay for Volume One.

Last year I saw Tommy Fleming do "Fare Thee Well Love" at the Celtic Fest in Chicago. He was great but the Rankins do it better. I saw the Aselin video of "The Island"... she sings very well but I didn't think much of the song. Perhaps because I'm not from Cape Breton and can't relate like the natives in the video can. There must be a lot of pride in the island that I can't relate to, being a landlubber.

Thanks Ginny for the interesting post re Cape Breton. A few months ago, I moved and only recently, while unpacking some papers, I came across a booklet of poems I had written and presented to The Cottars at an outdoor concert in Maxville, Ontario in 2004. Some of the poems I wrote were about the Cottars (I wrote a poem for each one of them) but I also had written one specifically about Cape Breton. I had visited Cape Breton in 1999 and I saw Roseanne for the first time performing at a ceilidh at a church hall in Baddeck, NS when she was 8 or 9 years old. I was greatly moved by the whole of Cape Breton and when I wrote the poem - Take-Me-Home Song - I tried to put myself in the position of a native son who was thinking about his homeland. I'm not claiming to be a good poet, but I thought that some of you might like to read about the places and things I had seen on the island. (The attachment is a Jpeg so you may have to enlarge it a bit. I just got a new scanner and I still learning how to use it.) If the file is unreadable, let me know and I'll re-type it. Cheers, Garth PS OOPS!!!!! I was just checking some of my previous posts and I realize that I already posted quite a few of the poems I wrote way back in Dec. 2006 and January 2007. I think you might be able to access them by clicking on my user name and looking at all my postings. (Time must be flying by. I had completely forgotten posting the poems before.)
