Hey guys. I got this idea from the OKP originally. Are there any songs you know of that you think The Cottars should perform? I have a few 1-The Mull River Shuffle (The Rankin Family)...I was listening to it a few minutes ago, and I couldn't help but think that The Cottars could do a really good arrangement of it. 2-Misty Moisty Morning...this song has already been discussed a bit over on the GBS thread...it's a really cool upbeat song though, and I think that they should perform it. 3-The Devil Went Down to Georgia....it was actually Joanna who first suggested that they could do this...I'm sure that Claire could pull off the amazing fiddle part! 4-Fairytale of New York...again, Joanna's idea...she says that she can imagine Ciaran and Fiona singing the male and female parts...I love that song, I wouldn't mind if they performed it sometime. 5-Song for the Mira...I mean come on, their father wrote it....and it's such a nice song...I would really like to hear them sing it sometime Anyway, those are just a few of my ideas...any other suggestions? I can probably think of lots more, but I want to hear some other ideas as well Post away! Cheers, Ginny

Hi Ginny What a great idea for a post...I like your suggestions! "Song For the Mira" would be perfect-o! I would like the Cottars to perform "Canadian Boat Song" ... Faintly as tolls the evening chime Our voices keep tune and our oars keep time Soon as the woods on shore look dim
We'll sing at St. Ann's our parting hymn Row, brothers, row, the stream runs fast The rapids are near and the daylight's past.
Why should we yet our sail unfurl There is not a breath the blue wave to curl But when the wind blows off the shore
Oh, sweetly we'll rest the weary oar Blow, breezes, blow, the stream runs fast The rapids are near and the daylight's past. www.contemplator.com/ireland/canboat.htmlThen there's "Caledonia" from Dougie MacLean (who wrote "Ready For the Storm". Caledonia was on the recent Celtic Woman PBS concert and it's lovely.

I was thinking fare the well love, with Fiona and Ciarian, I know they did that when they were younger, but it would be nice for them to perform that, or put it onto another cd.

I agree about "Caledonia", and I will even bet they will record it someday. "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" would be interesting if they'd try it; I'd also bet that Claire can play it.
I'd kind of like them to perform "Mary Ellen Carter", "Fields of Athenry" and maybe an Eric Bogle song or two.

I will say that one song I have always wanted to hear Fiona sing is Danny Boy. However, that song has been overdone.
I would like to hear The Cottars do The Island by Kenzie MacNeil. The Cottars have a large amount of Cape Breton pride, and this would give them a way to show it!
God Bless, afanoffiona

I wish I could tell you where you can hear this song, I only have it on tape but I there is a thread about Schooner Faire and you might be able to get the albums, but this song I think would be great for the Cottars to perform. I just love this song!
MY HEART'S IN CAPE BRETON TONIGHT Words and Music by Steve Romanoff
It's a Saturday night, and we're out on the town, My new friends and me, all alone, We will sing the old lovesongs, We'll make toasts all around, To living, to loving, to home, Then I think of just how much I miss you, And it seems I've been out here for years, Then someone will play an old fiddle tune, And I'll have to hold back the tears...
So forgive me, my friends, if I seem far away, In a moment I should be all right, Though my hands hold me here, working day after day, My heart's in Cape Breton, tonight.
Since I left Nova Scotia for the work I have found, I have kept all my memories within, Of the warm nights and laughter in Waterford Town, Or the lights on the causeway with the fog rollin' in. Then I think of just how much I miss you, And it seems I've been out here for years, Then someone will play an old fiddle tune, And I start to find my way home...

Hi Elizarose I don't know the song, but I have this feeling Ciaran and Fiona know every song there is that mentions Cape Breton, and they would certainly be fans of Schooner Fare. Claire and Bruce I don't know, but my point is if you went to a concert and asked them to perform that song, I bet they'd know it and maybe play it (unrehearsed...for free yet).

Maybe when I actually get to go to a concert I'll do just that. It seems as if they are very approachable and very easy to talk to. Thanks mott. AnamCara

The only problem with that is you'd have to try and catch them before the concert...
Oh well..you could sneak backstage ;D

Being they are from Canada, perhaps they could cover one of these songs. www.101kidz.com/holidays/canadaday/music.html These songs certainly filled me with canadian patriotism. And I'm not even canadian. :smile_USA: Well not yet anyway. :smile_Canada:

You could pretty much count on me to be like stupid earlier for their show, so if they happen to be around the stage, maybe I'll try to catch someone's eye , but then again if I try too hard they will think I am crazy and call security j/k lol I am not that ridiculous. Well we'll see!!! AnamCara

Well, the last time I saw them they did a request. For sure this was at the Irish Fest in Milwaukee, where it is easier to approach band members than at a concert. Someone had requested "Ready For The Storm", and Ciaran jokingly said "we don't do requests unless someone asks us". Probably if they were at a festival doing two shows, at the end of the first show (when they are quite approachable), one could ask them to do a particular song at the second show. Of course they might forget.

It would probably be easier to ask for a song that you they can sing, but you never know, they probably know alot of songs from the east, especially Ciaran and Fiona
