These foods are the staple diet of many people in northeastern Pennsylvania...
Tastykake - a Philadelphia brand of packaged cupcakes; a traditional children's breakfast.
Coffee cake - a pastry made with cinnamon
Tasty Freeze - an ice cream shop
Sloppy Joe - ground hamburger in a spicy tomato sauce and served on a hamburger bun
Birch beer - a soda supposedly flavored from birch trees; similar in flavor to root beer
Slushie - flavored ice served partially frozen
Italian ice - flavored ice packaged in a cup; eaten with a wooden spoon
Hoagie - also known as a submarine or hero sandwich; usually consists of a halved french loaf filled with luncheon meat. The Cheese steak hoagie is from Philadelphia and is thinly-chopped steak fried in onions and topped with cheese in a hoagie bun.
Mrs. T's Pierogies - small pockets of dough filled with potato and cheese sauteed in butter. Mrs. T is a popular brand name of packaged pierogies.
Haluski - fried noodles, onions and cabbage
Halupki - cabbage leaves filled with beef or pork
Pigs in the blanket (piggies) - similar to above but rolled
Pizza frita - fried dough covered in sugar
Fried bologna - larges slices of bologna fried in butter

We have most of those same foods in the Midwest too. The Hoagie in a lot of places is also called a Poor Boy. We have Mrs. Ts pierogis too. I know the stuffed cabbage as glumpki. The pizza frita sounds a lot like funnel cakes, which lay in your stomach for about a week after you've eaten one.
