Hey Joe! I know I have been posting a lot of info these last couple of days, but I just had to get one more. Apparently, Aselin's cousin, Rhea Chase, auditioned for Canadian Idol. Now, I rarely watch shows like that, but this article caught my eye. They are talking about how pop culture has surfaced in the maritimes, and how no one on Canadian Idol seems to be interested in the old fiddle and Celtic music indiginious to the Maritimes from the settlers. What was interesting, however, is Rhea talking about how her and Aselin, even though they are in the pop market now, still have chelidhs with all of their friends. It is an interesting read: www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/show/CTVShows/1113145355150_108553834/God Bless, afanoffiona

It IS an interesting article. It's true though that anyone who is going for Canadian Idol is going to be a pop or rock or country or jazz singer...they don't have much more variety than that. I remember back when the ECMA's were in Charlottetown this past year. A news report on it was saying how "East Coast Music" can't be just described as fiddle or traditional, because there are so many emerging pop rock, alternative, rap, etc bands coming out of Atlantic Canada...it makes me sad, really, to think that people are starting to forget about the Celtic music, and focusing more on pop, and whatever else. That's why I love this forum so much ...because I don't know that many younger people who can honestly say they enjoy Celtic music. Then again, Great Big Sea holds the record for most ECMA's, and they aren't exactly a pop band. It's articles like this that make me even more sad that the Cottars are splitting...they are perfect proof that some teens can still enjoy and perform Celtic music. Oh well...as long as the other Maritime Celtic bands stay together, the music will still remain, however popular other styles of music become around here. There's my daily rant Thanks for the article, Ginny

Hey Ginny,
I have a Great Big Sea CD. However, I haven't got around to listening to it. I will one of these days . I know Aselin has been greatly influenced by them, as have the Cottars.
I agree, it makes it all the more a shame that the cottars are spliting when you read something like this.

Hey Ginny,
Ugggh, I got home from college, and now I can't find it. Well, I guess I will be hunting for it.
Anyway, it is the one with "somedays" on it.
Here we go. It is called "Something Beautiful."

Something Beautiful! My favourite! Did you get it just because of "Somedays"? ...when I bought it, I listened to that song first to see how much it sounded like Aselin's version Cheers, Ginny

Ya,
Azi always says that Great Big Sea is one of her greatest influences. I have also tried other music that has influenced Aselin like Celine Dion and Bruce Guthro. However, Simple Plan is a bit much for my ears, lol. All of this is helpful in understanding where Aselin is coming from when she writes her music.

I personally like GBS's version of the song more...Azi sings it beautifully, of course, but I find her musical arrangement of the song rather dull compared to theirs...but I don't think she wrote the arrangement herself, so I won't blame her ...I'm the same with GBS..I really like listening to other bands that have influenced them, or that they've influenced. Bruce Guthro was on PEI last summer a bit. I sort of wanted to see him, mainly because I know he's one of Aselin's influences..and I find Simple Plan a bit much for me too Cheers, Ginny
