Alan Doyle comes from Petty Harbour, Newfoundland. He was raised in a very musical family. Before GBS, he was in a band called "Staggering Home". He is considered Great Big Sea's lead vocalist. He also plays acoustic & electric guitar, bouzouki and mandolin in the band. His trademark is his beautiful long brown hair. He is known to tell exaggerated stories. As a result, GBS fans refer to people who tell such stories as "doylers". He is also known to repeat himself often (ex. Lovely Lovely). Other famous quotes of his are "Have a dance", "Safe home and God Bless" and "We are Great Big Sea from the tropical island of Newfoundland". He is also a huge hockey fan.
