The first gig they played together was when they opened for the Irish Descendants at the Thomson Student Centre at Memorial University. The date was March 11, 1993
All four original members attended Memorial University in NFLD (at different times)
They have four songs in the movie "The Shipping News"
Alan produced Russell Crowe's CD, "My Hand, My Heart". He also co-wrote some of the songs on the CD, including "Raewyn"
Alan has also composed music for the NFLD TV series "Hatching, Matching and Dispatching" and the new movie "Young Triffie's Been Made Away With"
When Bob was learning to play the accordion, he was right-handed, but his grandmother, who was teaching him to play, was left-handed. As a result, Bob had to learn to play the accordion upside down.
Great Big Sea currently holds the record for most ECMA's -19
Sean is nicknamed "the Shantyman"
