Excellent, Adam! Watch out for flying guitar picks...right crushedroses?? Actually, Alan tends to hand his picks to those in the front row...so no need to worry about flying picks Cheers, Ginny

Let's hope that Alan is feeling generous and hands out the guitar AND the pick!

just the thought of even touching Alan's guitar gives me shivers... At the Barenaked Ladies concert, Tyler Stewart (the drummer) gave away drum sticks....just randomly threw them into the audience...except for the last one..it hit one of the lights on the stage Adam- are your seats front row center? or off to the side? If you are in the center, you're practically guaranteed a pick Cheers, Ginny

Sorry for the slow reply!
Yes, they are front and center....the tickets have been on sale for awhile but obviously the good people of Maine aren't aware what's coming their way!
Thanks everyone for the advice about the what to watch out for...literally! Can't wait - I have always been REALLY far away or close but standing with about a million other people.
Ginny - happy birthday!

Well, this past Saturday was the concert! Such a great time as always! I see a lot of musci due to being in an erea where music is popular and GBS still is always far better and more fun than anyone else! As I mentioned we had front row tickets off to the right side - we were directly in front of Sean with Bob just to our right and Alan just to our left. I was weary of the crowd in Maine as they tend to be a bit more relaxed than down in Massachusetts but the place was jumping...even the people in the two balconies were jumping up and down - something that didn't happen the last time I saw them in a fancy theatre! The setup was the same as the last tour - a set with just the four of them doing folk songs and then a set witrh the full band and lights in the second set. The addition on the first set was that the bass player (forgot his name) played upright bass in the folk set which was cool! Folk set went like this: Captain Kidd, Donkey Riding, Jack Hinks, Sweet Forget Me Nots, Billy Peddle, Concerning Charlie Horse, I'm a Rover, Boat like Gideon Brown, The Mermaid, River Driver, Scolding Wife, Old Polina, and Lukey. Donkey Riding was cool as it was different - more pronounced percussion and no fiddle. The version of Gideon and Rover were great but the highlight in the first set for me was Scolding Wife - never hesrd it live before! Second set went like this: Shines Right Through, Night that Patty Murphy Died, When I am King, Run Run Runaway with the medley of songs, General Taylor, Sea of No Cares, Helmethead, Consequence Free, Mari Mac, Excursion Around the Bay, Ordinary Day. First encore: John Barbour, Fortune Set Second Encore: Old Brown's Daughter. I never liked Shines Right Through and When I am King and they alwsay play them! Oh well! Besides that, the second set was great! The medley of songs with Runaway was about the same as last time - maybe a song added. John Barbour was awesome - never heard it live either and it was so intense. Again, the close with Old Brown's Daughter was great. Sean had a few drinks which led to lots of fun on stage. He kept hopping around like a pirate, and talking about "his unicorn". It also led to amazing performaces of Mari Mac, General Taylor, and John Barbour. No picks hit me....but I was close enough for sure and it was an amazing show as always!

First of all-Murray is the bass player Second, I agree about the Scolding Wife...I LOVE that song, and to hear it live with that awesome new arrangement was amazing Same for Gideon Brown and I'm a Rover ...did Sean mention Law and Order? My favourite part of when I saw them was the mermaid dance...was that part of this show? You got to see Shines Right Through Me live? Lucky! I wanna see it live! lol Speaking of Lucky, sometimes they do "Lucky Me" live, which I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a live performance of...maybe on the DVD? I love When I am King...the place was really rocking when I saw it What I would give to hear Sean talk about his unicorn and hop like a pirate...oh man that was probably so hilarious Anyway, great review! Cheers, Ginny

Hey Ginny and Joe, thanks! It was a great time and I have listened to them nonstop since...which is bad cause now at work I am humming the songs! Yeah, I agree about Scolding Wife! I love that song and it was great to hera it live. And Maurray is a good singer and has a cool voice - he should sing more! Sean did not mention Law and Order but did say that the Rover is fictional and the women in Portland should not worry about their shadfes later that night. And it's not that I don't like "Shines Right Through Me" and "If I Were King", it's that I don't love them like the rest of their songs! I have heard "Shines Right Through Me" in 2 straight shows so I guess it's good for the New England crowd! They talked about goiing out in Portland but I didn't see them around - they probably caused lots of trouble! And yes, he did the Mermaid dance! Oh, and they gave out free GBS calenders (ok it was a piece of paper with the months and a few pictures) and I bought a GBS deck of cards as well as another tee shirt!

From Alan Doyle's journal about this show:
So it turns out that in all my previous visits to Portland, I had somehow managed to miss the most beautiful section of the city. I’ve wandered the cool hilly streets of the harbour town for hours in the past and assumed I had the place covered. So I was surprised and delighted yesterday to find myself strolling in the old port, roaming in and out of the shops in the preserved brick buildings.
We played the Merrill Auditorium which may be the most beautiful theatre I’ve ever seen. After the show we went to an Irish Pub near the waterfront and had a grand night.
Tonight’s show is the last night of a short five day run. I would not be surprised if the future held more tours like this as it is tough to leave home for three or four weeks at a time.
All hands are looking forward to the release of the new GBS DVD, Courage & Patience & Grit. It hits the stores in November and features two full sets of music on DVD, an audio only CD, and four music videos. Hope y’all like it.
An overnight drive to Montreal and we should be on the Rock by lunch time.
Thanks to everyone for coming out this week.
Cheers
Alan

The mermaid dance was the best part of the concert that I saw. Who exactly gave out the free calendars...and what is on the t-shirt(s) you own? I have the one with the Hard and the Easy CD cover on the front, and the tour on the back, as well as a hoodie that I think was with the Beautiful tour. It says Great Big Sea, NFLD, est 1993...I love it Thanks for posting Alan's From the Road...I haven't checked their site in a week or so, so I missed it Cheers, Ginny
