Question for the Newfoundlanders

Who is/was Granny Snooks? Or what is the significance of Granny Snooks? All I know about her is that she lost her speech!

I have come across a few references to her in Canadian songs/writings and was wondering if she was a real person. It's just about the greatest name ever.

I always just assumed she was the grandmother of the guy who wrote the song

But maybe she was a real person who did have some sort of significance...other than losing her speech of course
Or maybe that was just thrown in there because it rhymes with beach!
