So this may interest only me but I am going to share. I find it interesting listening to different versions of the traditional songs GBS has recorded. Recently, I took an album of sea chanteys out of the library. The album has a version of General Taylor which is identical (except for the use of a squeezebox) and on the album is a USA version of Spanish Girls, an English sea chantey which is very similar to "Rant and Roar". The chorus for this song is: We'll rant and we'll roar Like true yankee sailors We'll rant and we'll roar On deck and below Until we have sight of the New Bedford line And Straight up the channel we'll go It's cool for me cause I live near New Bedford! Other cool versions of traditional GBS songs: Nic Jones, who is an english folk singer, recorded Yarmouth Town on his "Unearthed" album. And the Smithsonian has many recordings of Alan Mills, who is supposedly one of the influences of GBS in terms of the traditional material they pick. Almost all of the traditional songs they have recorded are on thje Alan Mills field recordings. Thought I'd share!

Hi Adam I also find it interesting on how GBS (or any artist) has taken a song and made it their own. Variations on the melody, different instruments and new verses can revive a long-forgotten tune. 'General Taylor' is one of my favorites! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! Joe

I once came across a GBS fan site that had all the original lyrics to traditional songs, and then the lyrics that GBS uses. I'll have to see if I can find it again.
I would love to hear another version of Yarmouth Town! That's one of my favourite GBS songs!!
Cheers, Ginny

I found another one. My uncle passed away just before Xmas and my aunt has given me his HUGE collection of folk (american, canadian, scottish, and irish) records from the 60s and 70s. So I have dusted off my turntable and been having a ball! I was listening to a Saill Wizard album from the late 70s last night (Scottish band featuring the grets fiddle player Johnny Cunningham) and the album has on it "Ferryland Sealer"!!! Interesting to hear the original Scottish version! They recorded it in 1978. Ginny, if you wanna hear another version of "Yarmouth Town" if I ever has some time, I'll post it on a websoace I have and give ya the link...i'll let you know if I have time!
