Hey Joe,
I am a huge fan of the Cottars. Expecially of Fiona MacGillivary. Her voice is so beautiful she absolutely has brought tears to my eyes on so many occasions. I remember the first time I ever heard her sing was on a Cape Breton sampler CD called "Cape Breton by Request." I was listening to that CD for the first time while I was studying, and when I heard Fiona sing, I just about dropped the book I was holding because I thought I was hearing the voice of an angel. I tried to find out what had happened to her since she made that CD, and that is what led me to the Cottars. I now have all of there CD's and every time a new one comes out, I make it a priority to get it ASAP.
As for my favorite songs, Fiona used to sing a beautiful song called "Tis Pretty to be in Ballinderry" which still sends chills up my spine when I hear it. The Briar and the Rose is a song the Cottars have always done well. Cape Breton Lullaby just has Fiona singing her heart out, and it is so passionate.
As far as other songs, I am a Piano major in college, so I enjoy these songs mostly because I love to play them. The Boy's Lament Medley is a fun song to play as it has sudden tempo changes and a lot of fingering work. Roseanne plays a beautiful fiddle solo which I am trying to arrange for Piano. I never caught the name of it tho. The Coulin, Hornpipes medley is a wonderful collection of pieces.
Anyway, I could go on all night. The Cottars have always been one of my favorites from the momoent I heard them.
God Bless, afanoffiona

Hello, I can see that you are a true fan of Fiona! I totally agree that her singing can bring tears to her audience. Congrats on majoring in Piano in college. Well done on arranging some of the pieces and also playing them. I just bought a songbook written by Allister MacGillivray (Ciaran and Fiona's father). The book is mostly sheet music but has lots of pics and lyrics. Unforunately the only piece that is Cottars-related is "Nova Scotia Diet", which they included in a live performance that I attended last year. I enjoyed reading your first post...judging from it I can see that we shall be treated to many more! Joe

Joe, Is the song from Alister's songbook also titled "You aint a Nova Scotian if you Don't Like Fish?" As a matter of fact, I just found out in Allister's book that it is called "Nova Scotia Diet", but I've seen the title you quoted as well. I had a difficult time finding the lyrics to this. I just modified my post on our "Questions" board b/c I found the lyrics on the book.
