Hi all,
Allister (The Cottars' musical director) told me that the new quartet will have a new management and booking team very soon.
Also, early in 2007, an official statement will be announced about some big plans which are now still under wraps.
I have several ideas about all of this. First, I foresee a change in the band's name. Second, I think that a new CD is in the works. This is merely speculation on my part.
Do you all feel the same...what are your thoughts ?

I agree, they seem to be changing their sound as well, and even though they say its a quartet, it sounds like someone else is coming in. This is very good news, i'm glad that they're not going to stop playing, but i didnt like that one sentence from alister about how they can now handle more challenging peices. It sounds like they didnt think rosie and jimmy were up to it, when to me it seems at least rosie has major talent... oh well, I cant wait to hear these big plans ;D

I agree with faerie that it sounds like they may add one more member to their group. I assume the "4-part harmony" mentioned by Alister will include this new member (unless he meant Claire and Bruce will sing harmony more, and Claire will sing more lead, play viola, etc.). I don't know if Bruce can sing though, maybe he sings good. I don't agree they will change the name of the group, unless they are completely changing their style of music, and Allister doesn't quite go that far with his message. Cottars seems like a well-known name in the industry, and their web site seems quite popular, no I'd keep the name if I were them. But maybe they do want to get rid of the references to when they were kids, and start a new direction. I will be interested though in their new arrangements and material. The song "Hold On" is edgy enough for me. The thought just sprung into me that perhaps they will do other Tom Waits' songs, the REALLY edgy ones he's written. Perhaps that's the challenging music Allister means. Also I don't take much stock in the implications that Rosie and Jimmy are being dissed. Allitser is selling a new product, as "new and improved", it's just hype. I would bet that Allister has a lot of respect for the talents of Rosie and Jimmy, but he wants to promote his new band as being the greatest. Nothing I see wrong in that; he's certainly not going to say that Claire is not as good as Rosie. Anyway I too am glad they will be back and hopefully they won't be TOO different from before. But it's fine with me if they are a bit edgy at times.

I am a little disappointed that the email implies an emphasis on "progressive folk". The folk scene in Boston has a lot of that and I've never got into it like I get into Canadian/Irish/Scottish - just a matter of taste. For that reason, I like "Forerunner" less than the first two albums. With that said, I still enjoy "Forerunner" and I am sure I will like what they do in the future. And, with the MacKenzie Project sounding very traditional based, it's like now having two groups of the Cottars which is cool!

I agree with every comment-I can see both sides of this. I found it a bit odd when Allister described this "new quartet" as a STUNNING group... I mean, I agree with Mott about the whole hype and selling a new product thing, but I have always thought of the original Cottars as stunning (in capital letters, of course ). However, I can't wait to hear these new voices and instruments. I hope they don't stray too far from their Cape Breton roots though with this new "progressive folk" style, but I think their more contemporary songs are fun as well. Maybe they'll take the same sort of road that Great Big Sea, The Rankins and The Barra MacNeils took-some traditional Celtic, some "celtic rock" (which of course, is mostly Great Big Sea), and some original songs as well. I know we're all really looking forward to finding out! Cheers, Ginny

Hi all, I really hope that The Cottars' next album may be a live CD! It would be great to hear the crowd getting into the songs etc. Make some noise for The Cottars next week, Ginny! Joe

Joe,
Do you know if this concert is still on?:
Saturday, March 3...Rockford, IL, USA...Coronado Theatre...7:30...WITH THE CHIEFTAINS
The reason being that it is only a two hour drive, and my dad said he was willing to get me tickets for Christmas...if it is still going to take place, of course.
God Bless, afanoffiona
