Here's an excerpt from an article from the Halifax Chronicle Herald Colourful Celts tune up The Chieftains lead the charge of musicians heading to Cape Breton for 11th Celtic Colours International Festival. By STEPHEN COOKE Entertainment Reporter IT’S NOT hard to tell Paddy Moloney, founder of the pioneer Irish music ensemble the Chieftains, is excited to be heading back to Cape Breton this weekend to kick off the 11th Celtic Colours International Festival. Moloney is happy to revive that Fire in the Kitchen feeling at Friday’s gala concert, with four Cape Breton acts "all brilliant in their own right." "Mary Jane Lamond was on Fire in the Kitchen, and came on one of our American tours several years ago, a lovely lady and so talented," he says. "Wendy MacIsaac is such a talented fiddler, and dancer as well; and the MacGillivrays, Fiona and Ciaran from the Cottars, who we’ve been delighted to have on tour with us as well.Read the full article here... www.thechronicleherald.ca/Entertainment/929555.html

Here's an article from the Cape Breton Post, Friday October 5 : Colour your world Celtic Colours International Festival opens tonight LAURA JEAN GRANT The Cape Breton Post SYDNEY — It may take place in Cape Breton but Ciaràn MacGillivray describes the Celtic Colours International Festival as a homecoming for Celtic musicians and fans from all over the globe. “Even if you’re not from here, it feels like a homecoming, I think. Everybody’s so friendly and the performers just love the audiences here. Everybody’s so receptive and because it takes place all over the island, everybody gets to really see some fantastic music. It’s really a community event,” said Ciaràn, who will perform with his sister Fiona in tonight’s opening night concert, headlined by The Chieftains. The show, which has standing-room-only tickets left, takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre. “We’re so excited. We haven’t performed at Celtic Colours for a little while and it’s always nice to play at home,” he said. Tonight’s show will also feature well-known Cape Breton artists Ashley MacIsaac, Mary Jane Lamond and Wendy MacIsaac who, like The Cottars’ Ciaràn and Fiona, have all had the opportunity to perform or tour with the world-renowned Chieftains. “The Chieftains themselves are, of course, Celtic music gods, so people who are coming to see them are going to see nothing short of sheer magic. Anybody who’s in the audience for The Chieftains is lucky. We feel twice as lucky to be on the stage with them,” said Ciaràn. “They’re just incredibly nice people and just extraordinary musicians and we were very fortunate to be able to tour with them a couple years back so this is kind of a reunion show.” Read the entire article here... www.capebretonpost.com/index.cfm?sid=68735&sc=145Enjoy Joe

From the pages of the Chronicle-Herald: Chieftains, guests come out blazing... MacIsaac, Lamond, MacGillivrays, Pilatzkes at their bestreport by STEPHEN COOKE MacGillivray siblings Fiona and Ciaran, formerly of the Cottars, joined the Chieftains on Friday night in the gala opening of the Celtic Colours International Festival. (photo by STEPHEN COOKE) IF YOU WANTED a good luck charm to bless the second decade of the Celtic Colours International Festival, who better to perform the honour than the original ambassadors of traditional Irish music, the Chieftains? And so it was at the opening gala concert for the 11th instalment of Celtic Colours on Friday night in Port Hawkesbury, with a handshake across the Atlantic between the legendary Celtic ensemble and some of the finest musical talent Cape Breton has to offer. MacGillivray siblings Fiona and Ciaran, formerly of the Cottars, are frequent tour guests of the Chieftains, and it’s not hard to see why. Fiona keeps growing in strength and feeling as a singer, demonstrated on the love song Ballinderry, while a set of sprightly Irish jigs demonstrated how they click as musicians with Ciaran’s bouzouki and Fiona’s tin whistle chiming together with a bright and chipper tone. I wouldn't take too much stock into the "formerly of the Cottars" comment. I assume Fiona (or at least the family) owns the name. The comment probably refers to the original Cottars lineup, and not that Bruce and Claire are the only Cottars now. ;D Yeah Ciaran and Fiona both look older, but photos can do that.

A Review of Fiona and Ciaran's performance from October 6 (Celtic Colours)................from today, 27 October 2007 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rambles.NET review by Virginia MacIsaac -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kinfolk at St. Matthew's United Church, Inverness, Cape Breton The venue was St. Matthew's United Church in Inverness and it was my first visit here. It's not a large building and the pews are theatre style, so everyone had a pretty good view of the front where the performers stand and sit to do their thing. Family history is a living occupation in Cape Breton, and emcee Larry Graham explained to the crowd that he and Gabrielle were double third cousins once removed, leading into the next act who were brother and sister Ciaran and Fiona MacGillivray, who come from their own background of musical talent and were part of the Cottars in recent years. Their strong points are moody vocals and instrumental cues to tug at your hearts and tear-ducts. Their dramatic timing showed in their signature song, "The Briar & the Rose," and in the political dirge by Ciaran and yet again in the instrumentals with whistle, mandolin and drums. Ciaran's strong interpretations of "a bunch of jigs" rates as one of the best parts of the show. Read the entire article here... www.rambles.net/cc07_kin.htmlJoe
